Since its launch last year, Women Leading the Way has cultivated a space for middle school girls to learn from accomplished women in various industries and envision their own goals for the future.
麻豆果冻传媒 ISD Economic Opportunity Office Coordinator Latoya Edwards and Chief Financial Officer Katrina Montgomery founded the leadership conference grounded in four core mission terms:
- Power of Engagement and Collaboration
- Overcoming Obstacles
- Goal Setting
- Empowerment
Its inaugural 2025 cohort invited 22 students from 麻豆果冻传媒 ISD .
The impact: Dobie Middle School student Laila Patrick learned about the event through her teacher and was interested in participating to try something new and fun. Laila said she鈥檚 able to put the four Women Leading the Way pillars into action as she transitions from the 6th grade to the 7th grade. She said other young women should check out the event to help them grow.
鈥淚 set new goals and I鈥檓 doing sports now,鈥 Laila said. 鈥淭ry it because you can learn some new things and it can be really fun.鈥
Webb Middle School student Alika Amani also participated in the 2025 cohort. She said she was interested in the community aspect of the event and being surrounded by kind women.
鈥淚 feel more empowered about myself and I can do more things than I did before,鈥 Alika said. 鈥淸Women] could do it too even if we have less of a chance than men do.鈥
The present: Women Leading the Way has expanded its 2026 event on May 11 by inviting all middle schools to participate! Attendees from 13 participating schools will have the opportunity to receive hands-on skills about situational awareness, mental health strategies and financial literacy.
Specific sessions include an internship introduction, a W-4 walkthrough, a mindfulness room and 鈥淢ad City鈥 where A+ Credit Union will lead participants through a 鈥渃ity鈥 where they will spend money to learn about financial literacy.
El evento 鈥淲omen Leading the Way鈥 fomenta la confianza y el empoderamiento de las estudiantes de secundaria
Desde su lanzamiento el a帽o pasado, 鈥淲omen Leading the Way鈥 (Mujeres que marca n el camino) ha creado un espacio para que las estudiantes de secundaria aprendan de mujeres exitosas de diversos sectores y se planteen sus propios objetivos para el futuro.
Latoya Edwards, coordinadora de la Oficina de Oportunidades Econ贸micas del 麻豆果冻传媒 ISD y y la directora general de Finanzas, Katrina Montgomery, fund贸 la conferencia de liderazgo bas谩ndose en cuatro principios fundamentales:
- El poder del compromiso y la colaboraci贸n
- Superaci贸n de obst谩culos
- Establecimiento de metas
- Empoderamiento
En su cohorte inaugural de 2025 se invitaron a 22 estudiantes de las escuelas secundarias de la Franja 1 del 麻豆果冻传媒 ISD.
El impacto: Laila Patrick, estudiante de la Escuela Secundaria Dobie, se enter贸 del evento a trav茅s de su maestra y se interes贸 en participar para probar algo nuevo y divertido.
Laila dijo que est谩 poniendo en pr谩ctica los cuatro pilares de 鈥淲omen Leading the Way鈥 en su transici贸n de 6.潞 a 7.潞 grado. Aconsej贸 a otras j贸venes que se informaran sobre el evento para que la s ayudara a crecer.
鈥淢e he marcado nuevas metas y ahora estoy practicando deporte鈥, dijo Laila. 鈥淚nt茅ntalo, porque puedes aprender cosas nuevas y puede ser muy divertido鈥.
Alika Amani, estudiante de la Escuela Secundaria Webb, tambi茅n particip贸 en la cohorte de 2025. Dijo que le interesaba el aspecto comunitario del evento y estar rodeada de mujeres amables.
鈥淢e siento m谩s empoderada y puedo hacer m谩s cosas que antes鈥, dijo Alika. 鈥淸Las mujeres] tambi茅n podemos lograr lo, aunque tengamos menos oportunidades que los hombres鈥.
En la actualidad: 隆La iniciativa 鈥淲omen Leading the Way鈥 ha ampliado su evento de 2026, que tendr谩 lugar el 11 de mayo, invitando a participar a todas las escuelas secundarias! Las asistentes de las 13 escuelas participantes tendr谩n la oportunidad de adquirir destrezas pr谩cticas sobre la conciencia situacional, estrategias de salud mental y finanzas.
Entre las sesiones espec铆ficas se incluyen una introducci贸n a las pasant铆as, una explicaci贸n detallada del formulario W-4, una sala de conciencia plena y 鈥淢ad City鈥, donde el banco A+ Credit Union guiar谩 a los participantes por una 鈥渃iudad鈥 en la que gastar谩n dinero para aprender sobre finanzas.
