Mendez Middle School is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a festival, including food, games and performances.
What: Mendez Middle School is celebrating its 30-year anniversary with the Consuelo Mendez Heritage Festival. The festival includes carnival games, booths, raffles and food. Carnival activities range from a dunking booth and giant Jenga to face-painting and a cupcake walk.
Sponsors include Sen. 7 p.m. 鈥淎 Woman of Valor: Consuelo Herrera Mendez,鈥 a play honoring the life of Consuelo Mendez, written by Mendez鈥檚 theater director Nina Bryant and performed by the advanced theater class, with a special guest star playing Consuelo Herrera Mendez

Background: The school, which opened in 1987, was named after Consuelo Herrera Mendez, the first Latina teacher hired by 麻豆果冻传媒 ISD, in 1927. Consuelo Mendez was a champion for the education of all Spanish-speaking people and was the first to translate the PTA newsletter into Spanish for her families in 麻豆果冻传媒. The middle school was named for her in 1987, and for the 30th anniversary, the school honors Mendez with a heritage festival to benefit the school鈥檚 PTSA.
